K D - ReviewRose McKenzie is kidnapped from Earth with 7 random animals onto a space ship owned by a race of aliens called the Tecran. They proceed to torture her and lock her away to study her. However the ship is operated by an artifical intelligence (what they refer to as a "Thinking System" [TS]) and he is awake and aware of his own captivity... Sazo (the TS) arranges the ship to be dropped into Grih space. Technically the Grih are allies of the Tecran, both being members of the five race United Council and signatories of the Sentient Beings Act (which the Tecran on the ship that Rose is held broke by holding her captive and torturing her).
Rose is introduced to the captain of the Grih exploratory ship, Dav and feels an instant connection with him (and not just because, unlike the Tecran, the Grih are more similar in appearance to humans, though bigger), but due to her promise with Sazo feels torn. She wants to tell Dav and the other Grih about Sazo, but she also promised to keep him a secret...
The Good:
I really enjoyed Rose's character. She was strong without being all powerful, she was intelligent and logical, but still "human" and relate-able. I really enjoyed how she interacted with Sazo, acting as both a morals mentor to the budding TS as well as being a friend. The romance between her and Dav was believable and really sweet. The writing was very good and the world building was just enough. Since most of the story takes place in space, I guess not much physical world building was necessary, but Diener does a wonderful job in fleshing out the different cultures of the five alien races.
The Bad:
There's nothing terribly bad that would detract from the enjoyment of the reading. A couple of points on the writing: not sure if it was a typo or not, but a character is referred to as "Yir" at one point and then "Fir" later. At another time, Appal (Dav's second in command) is repeating a conversation she had with Rose to Dav and repeats Rose's words to her as "Exactly" rather than what Rose actually said (which was "I know"). These are all really minor and don't hugely affect the flow of the story; they just stood out because everything else was pretty much perfect.
In terms of story, only one thing bothered me and that was why no one ever questioned why Rose, who had been tortured by the first alien race she had ever come across, would be so comfortable immediately with the second alien race she met. Of course, Sazo had reassured her of their honour code, so to speak, but THEY would not have known that at the beginning. This is why I took away a star.
Recommend?
Yes, definitely. I would definitely be reading more of Diener's work again and I hope she keeps writing more Sci-fi because this is probably one of the most satisfying sci-fi novels that I have read in a long time. If you like your sci-fi romances fleshed out with a great plot and likable characters, this is the book for you.

Dark Horse Class 5 Series Book 1 eBook Michelle Diener Reviews
I had never read any of this author's books previously, but found this one cruising through and decided to try it. I am glad I did. My husband may not be, as I recommended it to him and he stayed up until 4 a.m. reading it last night...
Well written, clean, logical, and written by an author who does not presume that the reader is an idiot.
The book is very much character driven, which I love, which makes it NOT space opera, which is action driven. Rose is no dummy, and unbelievably meantally well-balanced, considering what she went through. As Sazo not only saved her but did his best throughout the book to insure that his only friend was well cared for, their dedication and loyalty to each other was almost a romance in itself, with Rose taking on a parental role for an emerging personality with only a history of mistreatment behind him. their relationship made me feel really good - nothing sappy, and lot of humor in unexpected places.
This book was an extremely enjoyable read, and I immediately purchased the second book, Dark Deeds, which clarified many things and extended the plot line.
I look forward to the future books in this series; there may be only 5 "Class 5's" but the set up for future plot lines should not necessarily limit this series to only 5 books. The political possibilities are almost endless, and I look forward to the development of understanding of other races from the book, how they think, what their motivations are, and very much want to see more about the worlds and societies she has begun to develop.
I agree with an earlier reviewer - "More, Please!"
I liked this – and no one is more surprised than me! Never did I think I’d read a ‘sci-fi romance’, let alone LIKE it. But, the fact remains, that (thanks to KU) I opted to read this new-to-me genre. I have read and enjoyed Michele Diener’s historical romance books, so I took a chance. Am I glad I did – this was a treat!
The premise of the story is that a human being (Rose, our heroine) is abducted by an alien life force, taken to a galaxy far, far away, caged as a specimen and ultimately subjected to ‘experimental surgery.’ With some mysterious and powerful help, she escapes into the hands of yet another alien race and tries to make adjustments to her new circumstances. She is adrift, not sure who is friend or foe, and uncertain what is in her best interest. Then she meets the Captain of the spacecraft and the trajectory of her life begins to change.
I found the world-building very well done, and totally lost myself in the author’s imaginary construction – much to my very great surprise. I could not put the book down. Part of my enjoyment came from not knowing what to expect, part from the fascinating characterizations and (my personal favorite) the slow-building romance. I confess I read primarily for the romance. I love the banter and the sexual tension – the attraction between the H and h. This book took me totally out of my preferred time frame (regency England) and my comfort zone (historical romance), but it also gave me a very different (and enjoyable) reading experience. I will agree with another reviewer and state that the romance in this book was not as prominent as I might prefer, but it was still present and satisfying.
As an indicator of exactly how much I liked this book, I’ve already ordered and started on the second book. I might never find another sci-fi romance I like, but I most definitely recommend this.
