This is an excellent, beautifully written and fully realized vampire thriller. Meet Eugene and his sister Barb. They mostly fend for themselves while their angry and neglectful mother abuses them with insults and resentment. One day, everything changes when Eugene meets a mysterious woman named Penelope Umber. Penelope sees something in the shabby young boy, a promise, and a hope for her own families survival.
What follows is a legacy of vampire culture, a continuation of a species who fight for their very survival, and a whole new bag... Eugene himself.

Told in the first person, with wit, terror and gritty determination, Eugene struggles to find his place in this new world. Really, as if vampires aren't tough enough customers, a new form of evil stalks the breed and their progeny. Will Eugene survive?

Read this and see- not only for the strength and originality of the story itself, but to experience some of the best prose I've read in a long while. Mr. Spence writes with the light and airy touch of a poet... its enough to make me feel humbled.

Gratz, Walter Spence...well done.

House of Shadows Volume 1 Walter Spence 9780985483708 Books Reviews

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5!

I read this book with my horror group at Shelfari and found it to be an original twist on an old theme.

Young Eugene looks out for his sister Barbie, because his mom is often otherwise engaged. Sometimes they are left alone for days at a time without anything in the house to eat other than bread and ketchup.
Then, a mysterious woman catches sight of him and Barbie and their lives are changed forever. In a good way? You will have to read this book to find out.

I was pleasantly surprised at the turns taken in this story. The characters were well drawn and believable, (as believable as can be in a story of this type), and I took a great liking to the protagonist, Eugene.

As I understand it, there is more to the story coming from Mr. Spence. I will be looking forward to that release. Recommended!

Note In the interest of full disclosure, the author is part of our horror group at Shelfari, but welcomed honest opinions on his work. He also offered free copies to our members. I paid for my copy and even if I had not, my review is an honest one.
As my title states, I don't usually read about vampires. It is getting harder to find books that interest me and I decided to try branching out (again). This time I was not disappointed.

The main character is fairly well developed through out the book. There are a couple times where actions taken by the main character are a little too convenient, but mostly a believable character. The supporting characters are less developed (and less focused on as well) but flow well with in the story. Their personas are at least believable and not flat.

The story itself takes a slow/gentle start as you follow the main character as a child and teen, yet it was just the right combo of sequences moving the plot along while developing the character to make for easy reading and keep me interested. The climax, and build up to, come at the appropriate place in the book with good intensity; not over the top and not overdone. There is enough unresolved conflict in the near future for a second book to be well worth reading.

One of the things that I enjoyed most about this book is that it didn't avoid the stereotypical aspects of vampires (sunlight, garlic, blood lust, etc.) yet used them in a way that wasn't grotesque or crude. I have tried other vampire books and been disappointed because they were either romance novels in disguise or WAY too focused on the blood, gore and killing. This book was neither. It contained romance (to a very small degree) and it contained blood and killing, but at a level I was comfortable reading.

Over all its a pretty good read. I won't try and summarize the plot for you, its already been done. But at least you can have my take on how well the book was written.
Walter Spence has woven a tale of unique vampire creatures, and given the vampire sub-genre a fresh new look. The Breed are set apart from others in most aspects of their existence, and are truly a species unlike any others.

Let me start out by praising the language and smooth narrative style of this novel. This area alone sets House of Shadows leagues ahead of other similarly themed books. The pacing was perfect throughout--I never once found myself feeling that it was either lagging, nor being rushed. The highest praise I can offer is that I felt the style remniscent of some classic works written by those that I consider to be "literary greats".

House of Shadows captured my attention from the first page, and never let up. Although it is the first of a reported series, the novel ends on a very satisfying note. I will immediately be checking out the author's website in anxious anticipation of the next book in the series.

Highest recommendation! 5 stars.
