Sick of Shadows Elizabeth MacPherson Sharyn McCrumb 9780345356536 Books Reviews

I know it was written in 1984, but mailgrams? Weren't telephones invented? If Elizabeth MacPherson had a spine, I saw no sign of it. Even in 1984 women had more options than what this writer has offered. I read the entire book just to find out whodunit. (sic) If you're looking for a book with a smart, strong female lead, this is not it.
I started the series with Highland Laddie Gone. "Sick of Shadows" answers a lot of questions about relationships between Elizabeth, Aunt Amanda, Cousin Geoffrey and Cousin Charles. The letters between Elizabeth and her brother, Bill, are really funny and set the tone for the entire series. I highly recommend reading this book if you've read any of the others in the series, and if this is your first one, go ahead and read Highland Laddie Gone. By the time you finish that one, you should be hooked! Although these are all technically mystery novels, I enjoyed the character development and travelog-type descriptions of locations in this series.
Great first book in a series. The characters were well defined, though odd, and the mystery was well written. Elizabeth is invited to be her cousin's maid of honor. This is a cousin she has not seen in years. Elizabeth visits with her family, who are very wealthy and egocentric. When the bride is murdered, the mystery begins and everyone is a suspect.
Interesting plot, pretty disturbing cast of characters. Elizabeth is engaging, but scarcely the detective here. The writing is, as usual, absorbing.
Quite liked the dry wit, as well. A different genre from what I usually read, but refreshingly so. I definitely plan to read more in this series. Loved the Sheriff!
I read this back when it was new -- and so was I -- and loved it. Re-reading it recently left me a bit nostalgic for some of the cleverer books about Elizabeth MacPherson, and I will have to get back on that journey as they are released on . Still, this is a pleasant enough book which draws amazing word pictures to describe a very peculiar setting in the modern south. Elizabeth and her brother are compelling characters, and the rest of the wacky family are -- well, no spoilers! A light, easy and fun read, and the must-read intro into the other MacPherson tales.
I enjoyed this book more than I expected. I think this was written or set in the 1970-1980's before personal computers, etc. The characters were somewhat strange, but intelligent. I plan to read the next book in the series.
Sharyn McCrumb is a delightful writer who writes in many genres. This is the beginning of the Elizabeth MacPherson books. Cozy mysteries that keep you guessing.
